An outstanding pair of original NV 53 lounge chairs in rosewood and black leather, fully reupholstered and refinished by the best craftsmen in the business.
Designed by Finn Juhl in 1953 and produced by Niels Vodder, this pair was originally sold by Illums Bolighus, a Danish retailer of household furnishings founded in 1925.
The most striking features of the Model 53 are the shape, curvature, and joinery of the arms. The arms originate from a seamless 90 degree joint with the rear legs and narrow to a rounded point, sloping gently upwards where your fingers naturally rest. They resemble the wing of an airplane when viewed from above. The groove towards the rear of the arm marks the spot where your elbows land – a visual flourish that showcases Vodder’s degree of mastery.
We sourced this pair from a prominent figure in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Both frames had significant sun fading, which accumulates slowly with indoor use, validating their age. One of the chairs bears the Illums Bolighus placard and Finn Juhl stamp.
The Model 53 chair in rosewood is a rarity – and pairs are all but impossible to find.
These chairs have been restored to perfection, reviving the rosewood to its natural red and black splendor. We worked with Dynasty Upholstery to reupholster the seats in black top grain leather from United Leather. Moore’s Refinishing performed a full restoration on the frames. Aside from very light patina on the brass bushings that separate the frame from the seat, this pair looks as it would have on the day it left Niels Vodder’s workshop approximately 70 years ago. less
