Antique aquatint of Camille Corot’s “Nymphe Couchée au Bord de La Mer”. This cabinet picture was almost certainly created to satisfy the growing market for Corot’s figure paintings in the 1860s. The figure lies on a leopard or tiger skin; the accessory is responsible for the nymph’s traditional identification as a follower of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus. This original aquatint is from the 1886 Defoer Collection Sales Catalogue in Paris. This sale was lead by the famous art dealer Georges Petit and took place at the Galerie Georges Petit. ‘Procédé et Imp. Georges Petit’ printed in the center below the image. This aquatint was one of 150 limited edition prints on cream wove Japanese paper. In very good condition with a 3.5 inch light watermark/stain along the left margin. The mark does not cross the impression line. The original title page of the catalog is in the photos of the listing as proof of provenance. Unframed.
