Fox.
August Macke ( 1887 - 1914 ) was a german born Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the Expressionist group Der Blauer Reiter. Macke is considered one of the most important pioneers of Modern Art at the beginning of The Twentieth Century, recognized for his experimentation with color and form in his quest to invent a new language of art.
The French Modernist became his most important source of inspiration and influence including Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, paul Klee, and Robert Delaunay. Macke was only 27 years old when he died in The First World War in France. Despite his short artistic career, he produced over 600 paintings and 9000 drawings. The artworks which concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality are now considered as some of the most important of The 20th Century.
Just before the outbreak of World War I, Macke, Paul Klee, and Swiss painter Louis Rene Moilliiet, set out on a trip to North Africa to capture the Mediterranean light. Its effect on Macke resulted in these sun drenched vibrant watercolors. His sketchbook images of visual impressions of Tunis, Kairouan, and other North African locations are jewel-like in their color, fresh in their execution, and flashing in their transparency. The exotic atmosphere of Tunisia was fundamental for the creation of a series of artworks that are now considered masterpieces.
This a beautiful engaging art book, devoted to a painter whose talent ranks high in the history of Contemporary Art. It is printed on premium paper stock featuring 35 lithograph print illustrations, including 16 in full-color.
