An early twentieth-century, Post-Impressionist coastal landscape showing white-washed villas perched above the the French Riviera with a view towards the Mediterranean beyond.
Gouache on card. Signed lower left, 'Vlaminck' and painted circa 1910.
Provenance: Galerie Moderne, Brentanos, New York.
Vlaminck began painting in his late teens, taking lessons from the Parisian artist, Henri Rigalon. Vlaminck also worked as a musician after his father taught him to play the violin at a young age but his main interest remained painting, especially after he met Derain, by chance, following a train accident in 1900. The two painters set up a studio in Paris together from 1900 to 1901. This was a major turning point in Vlaminck's style, which took place after he saw Van Gogh's Post-Impressionist paintings exhibited in France. For many years, Vlaminck exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists and was the recipient of numerous awards and medals. Maurice de Vlaminck is recognized as one of the pioneers of Fauvism, alongside his friends, André Derain and Henri Matisse.
Displayed in an archival silk mat with gilt slip within a gesso and carved gilt-wood frame by Richard Tobey & Son.
