An elegant oil portrait of a young Arab woman shown wearing a veil and gazing with candor and interest directly towards the viewer.
Signed lower left, "Jan Hoowij", and painted circa 1960.
Jan Hoowij lived all over the world before settling in Los Angeles in the 1940s. He became known both for his surrealist work and for his penetrating portraiture of eminent members of the Hollywood community. Hoowij exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. His work is held in the permanent collections of national museums including the Brooklyn Art Museum.
