Signed lower right, 'C.A. Bartels' and painted circa 1945.
A member of the Hague School, Cornelius Anton Bartels was a teacher and realist painter. In the 1930's, he moved to Iowa where, in 1950, he was appointed artist-in-residence at Central College. Bartels was a member of the art association Malkasten in Düsseldorf.
