Signed lower right, 'Vantore' for Erik Mogens Christian Vantore (Danish, and painted circa 1925
An early twentieth-century oil still-life showing a view of delicate yellow and white daisies informally arranged in a stoneware vase and standing beside a bowl of fruit and cooking implements on a wooden table. A subtle colorist work of deceptive simplicity by this notable Danish Post-Impressionist painter.
Born in Copenhagen in 1895, Mogens Vantore first studied with his father, the pioneering Impressionist, Hans Christian Hansen. He continued his studies at the Charlottenborg Art Academy, to which he was admitted at the unusually young age of 14. Vantore subsequently studied in Paris (1923-25) where he came under the influence of the Post-Impressionists, particularly Derain, Gauguin and the Nabis. Returning to Denmark, he continued to exhibit successfully in Paris while commencing to exhibit annually from 1922 to 1947 at Copenhagen’s Charlottenborg Museum. In 1930, he was awarded the Akademie scholarship which enabled him to live and paint while traveling throughout Europe for two years. Over the course of a long career, Vantore exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. His paintings may be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide. His style is characterized by bravura brushwork, a saturated palette, innovative perspective and a compositional structure that imparts vivacity to his carefully-observed subjects.
