Alphonse de Lamartine served as diplomat and minister of foreign affairs during the Revolution of 1848. “He was a man of action as well as a creative writer—a statesman and a great orator” (Harvey & Heseltine, 390). While credited with quelling the insurrection of May 15th, 1848, he soon after fell out of favor and returned to literary work. History of the Girondists is considered his greatest prose work, which he followed with histories of the Restoration and Revolution. First published 1847-48. Lowndes, 1299.

Condition: Near fine; Frontispieces foxed, minor leather tear and light sporadic edge wear at extremities, strong square spines, text clean and fine. A handsome set.
