This sculpture was created by the Ecuadorian artist Luis Potosi. It depicts a swan-like figure with a looped body and a tucked head, likely crafted from a local Ecuadorian wood such as Spanish cedar, balsa, or laurel. The sculpture measures 17" from the bottom of the base to the top of the figure and rests on a 4.5" square block that is engraved with the artist's signature and the year of creation, 1975.
Potosi's artistic voice was shaped by his country's cultural landscape, colonial history, and his own Indigenous heritage. This particular work exemplifies the abstract style he embraced at the height of his career while still reflecting traditional Ecuadorian motifs that are consistent throughout his artworks.
