Bone occasionally painted a self portrait on his birthday. This is his 31st birthday portrait.
Bone was born in Brownsville, Texas and moved to the Hyde Park section of Chicago, IL in the 1970s. He earned an MFA from the University of Arkansas shortly before this was painted.
