Offering a vintage photographic print which fairly shouts “California!” to its viewer. Or should that be “Old California!” given the age of the twisted pine, not to mention the ageless boulders?
Assuming a certain degree of honesty by those responsible for its re-framing on 3/9/06, the top sticker would seem to have come off the original backing; that sticker tells us that the photo was displayed at the Watsonville Camera Club in 1952. That camera club seems to no longer exist. The president of another, extant club, suggested that photographs shown under such circumstances didn't typically identify the photographer, perhaps as a way of keeping personal politics away from the appreciation of the art. He also suggested that the print has probably faded somewhat.
The image itself measures about 16 ¾ by 12 ¾, 27 by 22 ½ including the oak frame. Hence it’s large enough to occupy a significant space and the image is certainly powerful enough to hold one’s attention.
A beautiful piece of California history…evocative of Ansel Adams’s famous Jeffrey Pine, Sentinel Dome, Yosemite photograph.
