The tortoise is a symbolic animal in Chinese culture, it is the symbol of longevity.

In Taoist (DOW-ist) philosophy, the tortoise symbolizes the universe. Its domed shell represents the heavens, and its flat underside, the earth. The tortoise is the hero of many Chinese legends.
In Buddhism, turtles do not merely signify longevity, but point to the idea of eternity and the continuation of life. In the older Vedic tradition, the entire universe is carried on the back of a turtle, and in Taoism, turtles represent the overlapping of the cosmos with Earth and mankind. See less
