Born in Indiana, Hartley Gurrey studied with portraitist Wayman Adans at Washington State College earning a BA in art. Continued her studies on a Carnegie Scholarship at the University of Oregon Art Student League. During her time in New York, she studied with George Picken, Will Barnet and Yasuo Kuniyoshi and later became a teacher at both Washington and Pennsylvania State Colleges.

Moving to Honolulu, Hawaii before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, whereupon she married a local art store owner, Richard B Gurrey. At the time, she was commissioned by the US Army to record the army operations and techniques In 1944 she exhibited a one-woman show at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
