The Herma of Hercules with the Nemean lion skin. The top carries a classic oil lamp with a beautiful arc handle and is surrounded by five armed candle holders, The whole rises from a Herme plinth with a wick trimmer hook and, on the base legs are the Classical tripod with a Bull-headed cap. A Complete pair with finely crafted details and a beautiful soft bronze patina. Loaded with symbols of Classical life and beliefs, The panther head of the Bacchus animal crests the oil lamp with the bronze flame, that never goes out. The Head of Hercules over the Nemean Lion head and the herma form carried over Zeus as the Bull-headed support. Herma's are the guardian posts of Safe Passage at boundaries or entries. A visual lesson in Classic mythology. Beautiful and somber. The measurements are 26" tall and 10.5" in diameter. See less
