Initially, these ceramics were grouped under the names famille verte ("green family") and famille rose (pink family) by renowned expert Albert Jacquemart in 1862.
Subsequently, the terms famille jaune (yellow) and famille noire (black) were introduced by merchants or collectors, and are generally considered subcategories of famille verte. While famille verte porcelain was prevalent in the Kangxi era, famille rose porcelain gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of these Chinese porcelain pieces were produced in Jingdezhen and exported to the West, while some of the finest were commissioned for the Imperial court. See less
