Large and imposing sculpture by South American artist Philip Moore of Guyana (1921-2012). He studied abroad and did residencies in sculpture at Livingstone College and Princeton University.
Moore's biography notes that he was a man of faith and that it heavily influenced his art, so it's likely that the anthropomorphic quality of this sculpture has meaning beyond the literal. Untitled, it appears there is a representation of prosperity and/or fertility as the female totem is covered in produce and small animals like fish, crabs, etc. A similar, though less detailed work called "Wata Mama" (1965) also includes produce on a recumbent female form.
This piece is carved of an unknown wood, and comprised of two pieces. We believe the lower piece was (partially) hollowed out and weighted (w/plaster or similar) in order to hold the two pipes that join the halves and provide stability for the sculpture.
The sculpture measures 7' (84"). In excellent condition with minor handling wear, no chips, cracks, losses or repairs. Incise/scratch signed "P. Moore 67" on the backside of the left shoulder.
