A vintage reproduction print of antique Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, from his series, "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road".
Twenty-Fifth station: Nissaka. In the title block: "The Sayanonaka Mountains". On the steep path to the relay, two bearers return with a light palanquin. A stone is placed on the road to commemorate the murder of a woman by a bandit over a thousand years ago. Legend has it that the woman before dying gave birth to a boy who, later, guided by the ghost of his mother, found the murderer and avenged her. It is said that the commemorative stone groans at night.
This reproduction print is not a woodblock reproduction, but offset, full-color print. Detailed.
