This very early blue and white salt glazed, stoneware milk pitcher reflects the early years of the pottery making industry in the United States. By way of the primitive creation of this piece, it reveals it was most likely made in the late 1800's to 1900. The inconsistency of the overall design and creation; the irregular bottom, mouth opening, handle and primitive markings over the surface of the clay indicate very early production, before quality standards were part of business operations within the pottery industry. This early piece was not part of a mass production, but rather a hand-made piece. Later on, there were similar pieces mass produced with the final products showing more perfected manufacturing processes and quality control standards. Primitive pieces of this type are especially interesting because they mark the inception of an era of mass production, yet they hold the very primitive markings of early makers.
There are no chips or cracks in this milk pitcher, but rather dents and irregularities that were in the creation o the piece and not a result of damage.
