A scarce and unusual English majolica syrup pitcher, register dated October 30th, 1877, to Enoch Wedgwood of Wedgwood & Co. A terrific addition to any majolica collection.
Enoch Wedgwood (1813-1879) was an English potter, founder in 1860 of the pottery firm Wedgwood & Co of Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. He was a distant cousin of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood, of Josiah Wedgwood & Sons.
Showing a brown Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sitting in a pink woven basket. A wide upper band glazed in turquoise blue holds a collared, hinged pewter lid, attached with the original rivets. The lid has an applied ornate thumb hold. The delightful dog is molded true to breed with his long coat, ears and front paws hanging over the basket. The handle is glazed in white, as is the interior. Good clear color, a humorous piece.
Marked with the raised English diamond registry.
6.0 in. W x 8.5 in. H
Very good conditions, light crazing as expected. Areas of glaze slip where the upper handle joins the body, most likely in the making.
