This pair of circa 1900 French Empire-style gilt bronze sconces showcases the mythological figure Acantha, a nymph beloved by the god Apollo. According to legend, Apollo transformed Acantha into the acanthus plant, a motif frequently used in classical architecture and design. These dramatic sconces capture the nymph amid her transformation, with her limbs elegantly morphing into acanthus leaves.
Each sconce features a beautifully detailed caryatid figure of Acantha, with her outstretched arms adorned with spiny acanthus leaves, holding a candelabra light on each arm. The meticulous craftsmanship and rich gilt bronze finish exemplify the opulence and grandeur of the French Empire style.
These sconces are stunning works of art that will imbue any room with historical significance. Their intricate design and mythological inspiration make them a unique addition to any sophisticated interior.

Rewired to US electrical standards, each sconce takes a candelabra-base light, incandescent or LED. Originally for candles, they have been retrofitted and have the electrical wire discreetly on the outside (see images). Please check with your electrician or contractor for additional specifics regarding installation. They have a metal bar in the back like a sawtooth hanger, to hang them like picture frames. There is also a later adaptation to screw into the wall around the center medallion of the lady's hip belt (see image). Your contractor will know what screws to use depending on the type of wall. Mold-made, they are not identical. The gilt has slight wear in a few spots but is still vibrant. Each: H=20.5 in. W=14 in. D=6.5 in. 15 lbs.
