Signed lower left, 'Willard Cox' (American, 1902-1974) and painted circa 1935.
Board dimensions: 18.75 x 12.5 inches.
An elegant, Art Deco period figural watercolor showing a young woman with bobbed hair standing with her hand resting on the back of a bent-wood chair.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, Willard Cox moved to San Francisco where he shared a studio with Maurice Logan in the 1920s and 1930s. With Logan, he was a founding member of The Thirteen Watercolorists and was a frequent exhibitor with them during the years before the war. Although he was based in California as a member of the San Francisco Illustrators' Club and the Bohemian Club, he was also active in Seattle as a member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters. Willard Cox was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards and he exhibited widely and with success including at the Oakland Art Gallery (1937) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1933), among other locations.
