JOSE LUIS BALAGUERO | Romanos | España | 1930-2019
José Luis Balagueró was born in 1930 in Romanos, a small town in the province of Zaragoza where his father worked as a teacher. The Spanish Civil War broke into his childhood, leaving him with the loss of his father and brother. This mark of pain and repulsion for the regime of the Franco dictatorship would accompany him for the rest of his life. After the war he moved with his mother and two sisters to Zaragoza, where he already excelled at school due to his passion for drawing. At the age of sixteen he decided to travel to France but was returned to Spain because he was a minor and did not have the required documentation.
On his return to Zaragoza he continued his training at the School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, where he moved in 1956. In 1957 he held his first formal exhibition at the Madrid gallery Biosca. In 1958 he arrived in Lille, France, invited by some artist friends, and became part of the Atelier de la Monnaie, a legendary group of artists with whom he exhibited at the K-58 Gallery in Lille. In the following years he travelled to Paris and Zurich, and in 1960 he settled in Formentera. During those years he participated in the International Painting Salon in Ibiza and exhibited in Berlin and in San Francisco at The
Pantechnicom gallery
In 1966 he moved to Madrid, where he met Fernando Zóbel, who was organising the launch of the Cuenca Museum of Abstract Art. Zóbel was impressed by the spatial abstraction of Balagueró's work and included him in the group of artists who make up the museum's collection.
In 1967 he travelled to Chicago for a short period of time, and ended up staying for a decade. There he collaborated on environmental art actions and installations with the Bulgarian artist Christo and his studio became a meeting point for Spanish artists passing through the city and where he received frequent visits from Manolo Mompó.
In 1973 he returned to Spain and became part of Grupo 15 and since then he has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.
