The background of this intricate lithograph and watercolor from France depicts a geisha playing a musical instrument, while the foreground depicts a harlequin and two women wearing more westernized clothing and makeup. The print is signed at the bottom “Brunelleschi”, and features an inscription in both English and French reading “Copyright 1928 by Sté Ame l’Estampe Moderne-Paris,” and “Published by " l’Estampe Moderne", 14 rue de Richelieu, Paris-1928.”
Umberto Brunelleschi (1879-1949) was a celebrated Italian artist who also led a prolific career in costume and set design, as well as children’s book illustrations. During his career, he worked for venues such as the Folies Bergere, the "Theatre du Chatelet" in Paris, and La Scala in Milan, and also designed costumes for Josephine Baker.
