Greig, British artist late 1800's to early 1900's, "Moonlight Fishing off the English Coast" scene of four fishing boats at night beside a large rock plateau, moon is peaking over a cloud bank and its light is reflecting off the sea. 4 3/4" x 8 1/2", signed J.W. Greig in the lower left corner front, CA number 3951, CA purchase summer of 2024 from a regional British auction house.
The painting has been cleaned and varnished in order to protect the paint film. The bright sparkles visible on the photos is the sun's reflection from the paint strokes and is NOT visible in normal room light. The photos were taken outside using strong natural light.
The painting has been re-matted with White Museum matboard, lined, Museum Glass and museum backing and framed with 3/4" burl veneer moulding.
No biographical information is available for J.W. Greig. Several of his works have been sold at auction over the past several years. He (or she) was probably a talented amateur artist who painted for their own enjoyment. See less
