Amazing 1800's Japanese Inari Fox Fire Taiko Drum on Stand from Edo period Shinto Shrine dedicated to the deity Inari … Read more Amazing 1800's Japanese Inari Fox Fire Taiko Drum on Stand from Edo period Shinto Shrine dedicated to the deity Inari - a popular deity associated with foxes who were known for protecting the annual rice harvest from threatening vermin. In Japanese mythology, foxes are supposed to breathe out flames which are represented by the flame motif at the top of the drum stand.

The drum is gilt-decorated and the stand made of painted and lacquered wood. It can be disassembled into three parts making it easier to transport. The symbol is Mitsudomoe (Tomoe) symbol represented in Shinto shrines dedicated to Hachiman, the God of war and archery. There is some light wear as seen in the photos and video and in overall really amazing condition given its age.

'Tsuridaiko' (Gakudaiko) Traditional Drum and the tsuri-daiko (gakudaiko) is a large Japanese hanging barrel drum used in gagaku (court music).
It is hung from a round tama-form stand made by lacquered wood, and a wooden gilt gold painted attachment in the shape of a flame is mounted on top.
The word tsuri means ‘suspended’ and daiko/taiko is a generic term for drum/s. This double-headed drum skin heads are painted and tacked on. On the sides are painted the "mitsudomoe" design in gold. This drum is used primarily in a bugaku orchestra.

Would be a fantastic addition to any Asian or Japanese art or artifacts collection of a very eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Rare and quite special.

This was purchased from a very respected Asian antiquities dealer nearly 30 years ago that brought this in to their antique gallery during their travels in Asia.

Comes from a home where it has been well cared for and in a smoke free home and an area that has had no animals.
