Josiah Wedgwood developed Black Basalt in 1786. This was the ebony stoneware that was created in order to mimic ancient bronze which was extremely coveted. Wedgwood subsequently produced Basaltware three shifts a day, for the next 220 years. Then they stopped making it. This particular pot is circa 1960. The clean, unornamented lines recall the spare design language of the postwar period.
