About the Photographer:
Joseph Buemi (American, 1923-2007) was born in Binghamton, New York and developed an interest in photography from his father, an amateur photographer. Following his service in World War II, he studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography. According to an article written by Mary and Eric Ross in 1982, His early photographs were taken with a simple box camera. "He acquired his first serious camera, a Rolleiflex, in 1948 and used it exclusively until 1975." After that, he used a 35mm camera, a Minolta SRT 101.
In 1963, he met and studied with the noted French photographer, Lucien Clergue. "Clergue was intrigued by Buemi's work and recommended that his photographs be placed in the permanent collection of the Museum Reattu in Arles, Frace, later the site of the International Concourse of Photography." In 1965, Buemi had his first major show in New York City at the Underground Gallery. Critic David Bourden wrote in the New York Village Voice that "Buemi's low-key compositions disclose unfamiliar patterns in common subjects."
"Buemi set out to capture the essence of an image as simply and directly as possible...and reduced darkroom work to essentials. Of darkroom work, he said, 'I try to print with feeling equal to that I had when taking the picture, so as to not lose what I was after in the beginning.'"
Of his work, Buemi said, "My work has been a meditation. I hope that it will serve as an inspiration to enrich the lives of those who view it."
