Before that it was part of the personal collection of the Comtesse du Barry until the French Revolution. Depicted is what might seem to be a lady gathering an abundance of roses in a garden, however the ceramic jug hooked into her right elbow has broken and left her with the armful of flowers gathered into the folds of her gown. Her look of disappointment appears to be shared with the gargoyle spout on the nearby water fountain. The composition is dense with layers of symbolic meaning and allusion to loss, be sure to view the detailed images to see more.
