Add a touch of strength and character to an office, library, or study with this impressive antique French bronze bull sculpture. Crafted in France circa 1920, the finely detailed composition depicts a powerful bull in a commanding stance, executed in the manner of renowned French animalier sculptor Isidore Jules Bonheur.
The muscular bovine is captured in motion, with one front leg extended forward, its head held high, and its long tail curved dramatically behind. The artist has carefully modeled the animal's powerful shoulders, broad chest, pronounced musculature, and expressive facial features, creating a lifelike portrayal filled with energy and movement. The finely textured forehead, pointed horns, and deeply sculpted folds around the neck further enhance the realistic quality of the composition.
The bull stands on a naturalistic rocky ground, mounted on an oval black marble base that provides a striking contrast to the rich, warm brown bronze patina. Although unsigned, the sculpture reflects the anatomical precision and naturalistic style associated with the French animalier tradition.
Isidore Jules Bonheur (1827–1901) was a distinguished French animalier sculptor celebrated for his realistic representations of horses, cattle, and other animals. The younger brother of renowned painter Rosa Bonheur, he studied under his father, Raymond Bonheur, and made his Paris Salon debut in 1848. His bronze sculptures are particularly admired for their anatomical accuracy, dynamic compositions, and expressive portrayal of animal subjects.
The antique bronze bull sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich patinated finish that highlights its intricate modeling. Weighing approximately 30 pounds, this substantial decorative piece would make a striking addition to a desk, console, or equestrian and animalier art collection.
