This war scene painting is a real testimony of the front lines between Prussia and France in 1870.
The painter Leon Gauthier immerses us in the French side of the infantry in navy blue and red uniforms. In many ranks, the men advance determinedly and one of them arms in the air seems to encourage them towards confrontation. Inanimate bodies are lying on their sides. In the background, the shapes are imprecise and we can make out a large army made up of men and their Chassepot rifles with bayonets.
