The painting depicting an interior scene of 17th Century French Royalist Cavaliers playing chess. Two of the Cavaliers are seated at a carved table playing chess in their extravagant outfits, lace collar ruffs and rapier swords, while a third is seated and seems to be asleep or intoxicated, possibly explaining the silver footed wine cooler with wine glasses in the foreground below. A forth Cavalier is standing behind the others lighting is pipe with wisps of smoke rising to the ceiling.
The painting is finely executed, colors are strong and vibrant, the painting is signed & dated lower left "M. J. Cabellero Paris 1910", the painting is housed in the original gilded gesso frame, both the painting and frame are in very good condition. This seems to be the largest canvas the artist produced, a very similar yet smaller painting by Caballero was sold at Christies Auction in 1988 for $26,000.

Máximo Juderías Caballero was born in Zaragoza, Spain in 1867. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. In 1883 he moved to Madrid to continue his training at the Academy of San Fernando. He decorated the palaces of Don Rafael Ruiz Martínez and Don Enrique de Aguilera, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo. He made the sketches for the Palace of the Duchess of Castro Enríquez. Displeased with this commission, which he never carried out due to its thematic expression, he went to Paris and studied at the Julian Academy and found commercial success and won many awards and resided in Paris for about 25 years. Whilst living in France Caballero together with Francisco Domingo Marqués and José San Bartolomé Llaneces created works in the 17th-century style. Because of the impression that World War I had on him including the bombing of his home & studio, he left Paris and settled in Sardañola (Barcelona). He stopped working and only made some paintings and charcoal studies as personal entertainment, which he signed with his second surname “Caballero”.
