The story of John the Baptist, a prophet in the New Testament and for Islam, is recounted in the Gospels: he accompanied Jesus at several points in his life, baptized him in the waters of the Jordan and is said to have recruited the first apostles. He is considered by Islam to be a prophet descended from Imran.
