Translation of Documentation:
History of Shigaraki-ware:
Approximately fifty years ago, Emperor Shōmu used clay from this area to make roof tiles during the construction of the Shigaraki palaces. This marked the beginning of Shigaraki pottery. Shigaraki pottery developed rapidly and, supported by the rich clay grounds, it grew into one of Japan's major pottery centers.
from the end of the Asuka period through the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, Shigaraki pottery evolved with the changes in people's daily lives of that time, reflecting the characteristics of each era. During its natural development, it was influenced by the concepts of "wabi" and "sabi," which emphasize simplicity and rustic beauty. These qualities were appreciated in tea ceremony rooms and bathrooms. After the Meiji period, with the advent of new techniques, the range of Shigaraki products further expanded. It now includes a wide array of items, from garden pots and garden ceramics to architectural ceramics and ceramics for tea ceremonies.
Thus, the history of Shigaraki pottery directly reflects the changes in the lifestyle and emotions of the Japanese people over time. In these rapidly changing times, Shigaraki pottery remains a beloved symbol of Japanese cultural heritage.
