For … Read more A richly decorated contemporary mixed media and collage artwork “Untitled (Collie)” by American artist Randa Newland. Created in 2002. For the composition, the artist assembled oddments of vintage floral wallpaper, retro upholstery, and an idealized school coloring-book illustration of a dog. She topped this with two cloth squares of reversible jacquard paisley designs, which she encrusted with sewn beading. A sculptor by training, Newland at first bought readymade beaded bags to cut and include in her collages. But she soon found that she enjoyed the repetitious, old-fashioned task of beading, and she began stitching each bead in place herself. Newland came to maturity during the Feminist Art Movement, and so she chose to work with fabric, a material previously relegated to the realm of “women’s work.” Her art freshly interprets this tradition of art by women. Newland (1946- ) a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design and is represented in the permanent collections of various institutions including the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Little Rock Art Center.
