A monumental dynamic abstract acrylic painting on canvas titled "Cobalt Violet Dark" by Detroit artist John Egner (1940-2021). Signed, titled, and dated 1980 on the verso. Bold expressionistic brushstrokes create a marvelous modern or contemporary statement. From a private collection, originally purchased from Susanne Hillberry Gallery (gallery tag on verso). Dimensions: 80"h x 129"w x 2"d (framed). In very good vintage condition.
John Egner (1940-2021) was a Yale graduate and studied under influential artists such as Frank Stella, Jack Tworkov, and Al Held. He set up a studio in the cavernous old automobile Convention Hall that backed up to the Vernor's Ginger Ale plant, and other artists followed. He was a luminary of the burgeoning art, poetry, and music scene that rocketed out of Detroit 1960s civil rights movements and '67 race riot, and his impact can still be heard and felt through the myriad people he taught and connected with over the years. Egner was a professor at Wayne State University for 21 years, and was a seminal figure in Detroit's Cass Corridor art scene of the 1960s and 70s. In 1978 he was one of 10 "Young American Artists" in the Exxon National Exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York City. Egner's work is part of several museum and private collections, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, and Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.
