About: Loet Vanderveen (1921-2015) was a visionary Dutch-American sculptor celebrated for his exceptional bronze creations that immortalized the essence of wildlife. Born in Rotterdam, he honed his artistic brilliance at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Relocating to California in the 1960s, he began his artistic journey towards sculpting animals with unparalleled precision and elegance.
One of the most famous sculptors of our time, and the most prominent wildlife sculptor,
Vanderveen’s bronze sculptures, particularly of majestic wild cats and graceful birds, mesmerized art enthusiasts worldwide. His works, characterized by intricate detailing and a deep connection with the animal realm, garnered global recognition and adorned collections of museums and collectors. Vanderveen’s legacy endures as his sculptures evoke a timeless celebration of the beauty and spirit of the natural world. He studied Chinese glaze techniques for three years with Fong Chow, then curator of the Far Eastern Department of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This knowledge eventually led to applying patinas to bronze animal forms. Living in a remote area in Big Sur California where there was an abundance of wildlife, coupled with his love for animals, led Loet to create ceramic animal forms. Striving for more sophisticated and graceful images, he ventured into designing animals in bronze, enhanced by a rich palette of subtle patinas, offering uniquely stylized interpretations appreciated by distinguished worldwide collectors. His works are in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world.
