This beyond beautiful 1840's - 1850's Mettlach Villeroy & Boch stoneware vase is exceptionally made, captivating and oh-so charming...even the obvious signs of repair made to it with it's intricately placed and thoughtful staples. Base of vase shows the brand logo, although worn down given its almost 200 year age! Vase can still hold water. Staples were used before the advent of chemical adhesives when valued pottery was found to be damaged; artisans would carefully and expertly drill holes in a ceramic vessel, use a fine piece of metal to re-connect the damaged piece to the main body of vessel and fill in surrounding holes around metal staple with fine porcelain powder then paint to match the color of overall surface area.
