Crafted in Southern France circa 1780, the rectangular mirror is distinguished by its slender proportions, delicate ornamentation, and richly patinated giltwood finish.

The elaborate pierced pediment is centered on a carved rosette rising from a fluted base, surrounded by gracefully arranged laurel branches, scrolling foliage, and crossed decorative elements. The symmetrical composition is characteristic of the Louis XVI period, emphasizing classical balance and restrained ornamentation. Carved ribbon and tassel motifs embellish the upper sides, while the lower corners feature architectural detailing and small projecting feet.

The rectangular frame is outlined with a delicate beaded molding, providing a refined border around the original mercury glass mirror plate. The beautifully aged glass displays natural oxidation, foxing, and subtle variations in reflection, creating the distinctive character associated with authentic 18th-century mirrors.

The original wooden backing remains in place, preserving the mirror’s period construction. The carved frame retains its warm gold leaf finish, with gentle wear and variations in patina that highlight the intricate craftsmanship and age of the piece. Hooks and hanging wire are fitted on the reverse for wall installation.

The antique Louis XVI mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Its petite proportions and decorative crest make it particularly well suited for a powder room, entryway, bedroom, or as part of a collection of antique French mirrors.
