A very substantial Republic Period Chinese porcelain jar adapted into a lamp with high quality gilt finished wooden base and cap. A magnificent piece of porcelain in its own right, the decoration is a large scale version of a fairly rare pattern featuring chickens, in two fully realized scenes. Roosters are finely painted crowing, facing off, posing and doing humorous chicken things like fighting over a worm amid a fantastical landscape featuring exuberant green rockery and flowering fruit trees. Ca. 1900. Very good condition with a few firing flaws near the top rim, as made. New drum shade in vivid plum.
