Dimensions: 6 inches diameter x 1.5 inches tall (each)
Rare travertine vide-poche bowls, circa 1975. Two bowls are available; buy one or both. The bowls are hand carved with soft, curvy lines. The travertine stone is creamy white with taupe accents. Bowls were made in Italy and imported to the US for Joseph Magnin. They were likely designed by Egidio De Rosa and Pier Alessandro Giusti, or Charles Pfister -- all of whom created similar designs for the Italian studio Up&Up (now operating as Up Group) in the 1970s. Excellent condition with faint scratches on the undersides. Imperfections (tonal variations, pits, etc.) are inherent to natural stone and are not considered damage.
In French, "vide-poche" translates literally as "empty pocket," but also refers to the objects that one uses on a day-to-day basis. The term has poetic allusions to the plenitude of detritus that shapes ordinary existence. It seems fitting that one's everyday "stuff" (Rolex, Swiss Army knife, lip balm) should be tossed into a bowl of such elevated presence.
