This beautiful pair of copper plate engravings, finely hand-colored in gouache and watercolor, is part of the significant work known as "Herculaneum—Le Antichita e Ercolano Esposte".
Naples, Regia Stamperia, 1755-1792
The engravings depict ethereal women in flowing robes who appear to be suspended in the air. One woman looks to be playing musical finger cymbals.
Produced by the Accademia Ercolanese (founded by Bernardo Tanucci, Secretary of State of Naples), it was the first attempt at a definitive catalogue of the buildings and antiquities excavated over a period of 46 years at Pompeii and Herculaneum under the patronage of the King of Two Sicilies, Charles III. Le Antichita had an important influence on the development of neo-classical art throughout Europe.
The engravings are numbered page 99 and page 115 of the catalogue.
