Crafted from deep, luminous emerald-green overlay glass, the piece captivates with its rhythmic, hand-cut lens-cut decoration (also known as ball-cut or “eye-cut”).
The design is highly characteristic of the geometric works by Karel Wünsch, which he created in the 1960s for the renowned Nový Bor (Haida) glassworks in the former Czechoslovakia. The deep, concave lenses create a fascinating optical “Op Art” effect: they act like magnifying glasses that refract the light and, depending on the viewing angle, multiply and distort the interior of the vase.
The vase has the classic, voluminous shape of a large cognac glass, providing a wide surface area for the light-refracting lenses. The clear crystal base features a masterfully hand-polished pontil—a hallmark of the highest-quality handcrafted glassmaking of that era.
