Wonderful green glazed ceramic jug from Biot, southern France. with an exquisite lead sulfide glaze (alquifoux) various shades of green and browner shades are achieved. with this technique, in addition to shine, the piece is made waterproof. Exquisite molding, the parts of the jug are accentuated thanks to the slight lines. It also presents a beautiful, wide handle with grooves that branch in the lower area and a mouth with a raised finish and a very noticeable spout.
Thanks to the clay soils of the Brague basin, Biot and Vallauris became centers of ceramic manufacturing. Since the 16th century Biot jars were popular both for transporting and storing goods. Then, in the 19th century, with advances in conservation techniques, this manufacture became essentially decorative ceramics. For this reason, during the 19th century, about 40 factories will disappear from Biot. However, some masters continued to make pieces, thus continuing with an ancient technique, such as Mr. Merget and René Augé-Laribé.
