Paul Soldner is renowned for his dedication to … Read more A modern pottery vessel by American potter Paul Soldner (1921-2011) circa 1960s. Paul Soldner is renowned for his dedication to develop and further Raku firing in American pottery field. Inspired by Japanese Raku ware, he used low temperature firing process for his hand-built pieces from a potter's wheel or slab-building and often a combination of both.
The vessel on offer is a great example of his modern Raku ware, full of free-spirit and random kiln occurrences. In a form of a large urn, the vessel was wheel thrown but enhanced by hand shaping and molding to assume its organic form with irregular features. The top opening was molded into a mysterious sculptural orifice. The lower body was sharply scraped down to a tapering base. Unglazed, the surface displays a changing hue with mottled yellow, grey and splashed orange spots on the background that features subtle geometrical patterns randomly pressed with a stamp or patterned spatula.
Next to the opening on top, there is an artist's petal stamp that was used around 1960s. See less
