A korean white porcelain jar with underglaze blue paint circa late 19th century toward the end of Joseon Dynasty. Porcelain jars of this elongated form with swell shoulder, wide mouth through a short, everted neck were made in various size in the late Joseon period. They served a wide range of functions such as flower vases, culinary jars or apothecary bottles. This jar is of a medium size and rises from a slightly tapered base. Flying phoenix with open wings are depicted among the clouds on both the front and the back. The mythological bird is one of the most auspicious symbols in Asian cultures and is often found on Korean ceramics. The shoulder is decorated with scrolling youi-head and the neck circumvented with lines. The painting was rustic and folky, indicating that this jar was a vernacular piece that was used on a regular base in the household.
For comparable jars with similar phoenix design, see C.75-1930 in the collection of V and A museum in London; Item 2017.58.1 in the collection of Portland Art Musuem; Object 82.558 in the collection of The Museum of Fine Art Houston.
