Rometti was one of the first ceramic companies in Italy -- along with Richard Genori, near Florence -- to bring fresh, modern design to its production, and this piece is a superb example. The boldly drawn figures of Bacchus and Ariadne -- both holding a wine bottle in one hand and a glass aloft in the other -- are glazed in cobalt blue on a pale grey ground. According to mythology, Bacchus came across Ariadne on the island of Naxos just after she had been abandoned by Theseus, and Bacchus immortalizes her by throwing her crown into the sky, becoming a constellation visible to mankind forevermore. The bottom is marked with the Rometti firm's monogram, and with an original paper label. See less
