the aj table lamp was designed in 1960 by danish architect arne jacobsen as part of his complete interior concept for the sas royal hotel in copenhagen. Jacobsen was responsible for every detail of the hotel’s design—from furniture and textiles to cutlery, door handles, and lighting—making it one of the most cohesive total design works of modern architecture.

departing from the soft, organic curves of his earlier lighting designs, jacobsen gave the aj lamps a sharper, geometric silhouette. The head consists of two intersecting forms: a cylinder housing the socket and a conical shade angled to cast light precisely downward. The oblique cut at the end of the cone allows the lower edge of the shade to remain parallel to the lit surface. A tilt joint inside the cylindrical stem makes it easy to direct the beam exactly where needed. The interior of the shade is painted white for optimal light diffusion.
