Attributed to Theodore Gericault (French, nd indistinctly signed lower left, 'Geri...l.'; painted circa 1815. Oil on canvas laid down on board.
Theodore Gericault, known also as Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault, was educated at the Lycee Louis-le-Grand. Gericault studied under both Carle Vernet and Guerin in addition to being strongly influenced by Rubens. Gericault exhibited and established himself in the Salon of 1812 before traveling abroad in 1816 to study in Italy. In the Fall of 1817, Gericault returned to Paris where he lived in Montmartre until 1820 when he moved to London and produced several series of lithographs over the course of his two year stay there.
