This is late Meiji Period Attrib. antique Japanese Bronze Champleve Enamel Koro (Incense Burner). This is an intricately enameled incense burner with a removal lid and highly detailed foo dog finial. The colors are in rich jewel tones of Turquoise, Lapis, emerald and deep ruby. This is in good antique condition, with only a little bit of loss of the enamel. This is a featured item we are offering from a collection uncovered in a prominent Texas estate that was filled with unusual and beautiful artifacts, antiques and decor.
Japanese Champlevé is a decorative technique used primarily in metalwork and ceramics. It refers to the process where designs are engraved or etched into a metal surface and then filled with enamel. This was commonly done in a bronze medium where intricate designs are carved into the metal surface and then filled using colored enamel. The enamel is fused to the metal through firing, creating a durable and colorful art form often for a functional vessel.
