This large Pennsylvania German tinware coffee pot is a beautiful example of American folk art, showcasing primitive painted tole techniques. The front of the coffeepot is adorned with striking and vibrant tulips, fruit, leaves, and ornamental swirls against a black backdrop. Additionally, red berries and dark green leaves grace a wide, lighter green band near the base. The original unpainted tin on the back adds to its authentic charm.
Crafted with attention to detail, the pot features a slightly domed hinged lid with a snug fit, a sturdy strap handle, a straight spout, and a tapered body. Pennsylvania Germans were usually farmers who lived in isolated areas and for this reason were late in assimilating into mainstream American culture. As a result of this, they retained the aesthetics of their country of origin evident in this piece.
The term "Pennsylvania Dutch," while commonly used, is a misnomer. The accurate expressions reflecting the linguistic and cultural background of this community are "Pennsylvania Deutsch" or "Pennsylvania German."
With its historical and artistic significance, this coffeepot is a captivating collector's item, appealing to history enthusiasts and those dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
Measurements: 9" tall including lid finial by 10 1/2" widest point (spout to handle) by 6 11/16" bottom diameter approximately.
Weight: 1 lb. 7.2 oz. unpacked.
